October is here! It’s by far my favorite month, and I know that’s being a little biased. Since it’s my favorite month I’ve decided to have a little promo within my etsy shop, The Bone and Arrow. For the rest of the month of October, get free shipping on all orders! I also love doing custom orders so don’t hesitate to reach out to me for them as well.

I’m looking for other blogs in this blog-land that may be interested in swapping a feature giveaway, or even just sponsoring a giveaway. Email me if you’re interested. missmarieomarie @

im cheap and irritated

I’ll admit it, I’m cheap when it comes to buying material possessions. Nothing irritates me and infuriates me more than when I make the final decision to spend a little extra money than I want to on one particular item, and that item turns out to be pretty crappy.

Just under 3 months ago I bought my first pair of rain boots. I talked about it in this post. I was pretty damn excited to not have to worry about having my feet get wet while out walking all day. I wasn’t ever really blown away by Nine West, having owned a few pairs in the past but figured I’d give them a go. I have a super cute pair of pointed black flats that I bought from them. My two cents on those? They feel like hard plastic and hurt my feet. But I suffer for the cuteness factor of them.

Anyways back to these damn boots. I’ve worn them a handful of times, and actually found them to be comfortable. I looked outside this morning, saw the rain falling, and decided to wear these damn boots. I put them on and start wandering around the house getting my shit together for the day. I knock into a chair and my left boot feels a bit off. I look down to inspect what’s going on and see my boot essentially wide mouth grinning at me. Sole flapping and all.

Oh haiiiii!

Ok, that’s fun. I talk myself off a ledge and say it’s totally fine. I can glue it when I get home, no harm, no foul. Right? Yeah. Sure.

Later on in the day I feel a slight draft on my right shin. Weird, I have 2 layers of socks on and these (somewhat) hefty rain boots. I take a moment and look down. What do I see now? A slit running from one side of the boot to the other. Per-fect.

I contine with my day formulating the not so nice email I was going to write to Nine West when I got home. (Yeah, I’m my mother’s child in that aspect).

I get home and send an email to Nine West. It went something like this.

Dear Nine West,

Your boots suck my ass. And your ballet flats aren’t even comfortable either.

You suck.

Stephanie Marie

I’m lying, it didn’t say that. It was more eloquent and professional. But the point is still there.

september birchbox – my last month

I did it. I made the plunge I had been hesitantly weighing in on since I started getting my birchbox in the mail.. I canceled my subscription. I loved getting the products in the mail, but overall I wasn’t completely satisfied with the variety from each month. I got a lot of hair elastics (hi, short haired gal here), perfume samples, and generally things that didn’t interest me. I found myself saying “eh this month kind of sucked” a little too often. When you first sign up for your birchbox, you take a survey letting them know what types of products you’d be interested in receiving. Great right? Maybe I just goofed on my survey.

Anyways! Here is the last bit of products I received in my birchbox.

1:: Birchbox and Color Cube Custom Collection: Put a Pin In It
I actually loved the color I got. It was a pink metallicy shade, and I got a lot of compliments on it. The only downfall? It chipped so easily. The same day I put it on, it was chipping away. Boo! I loved getting the nailpolish samples in the mail. I have a lot of polish colors and like to get samples of colors I’d usually never choose.

2:: BVLGARI Mon Jasmin Noir
“.. think Grace Kelly on a starlit evening.” – Sounds nice right? For $83 a bottle it should be. I’m sure it’s real nice if you like perfume scents. I do not. (Sounds bratty right?)

3:: The Brush Guard Variety Pack
Great idea! The only issue (collective gasp here) I don’t own any brushes. I’m not much for eyeshadow, and I don’t use a brush to apply lipstick or eyeliner.

4:: Twistband Lace up for Fall
I used to sell these at the boutique I managed, and everyone loved them. I’m told they don’t pull your hair, but they do get a little loose I’m told if you have thinner hair. I can see the appeal, sadly, short hair gal here, remember?

5:: Vasanti BrightUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator
“This powerful exfoliator mimics the results of professional microdermabrasion, minus the potential for redness and sensitivity.” – I haven’t tried this yet, but it is certainly the only thing thus far in the box I loved. Especially with winter fastly approaching (ekk I said it..).

6:: WEI to Go Sleep Over Kit: Real Clean and Ideal Skin
A little to go pack of cleanser and tinted moisturizer for when you’re on the go. Cute idea! I’m always hesitant to use a cleanser or tinted moisturizer that I haven’t thoroughly tested. Sensitive skin can be real testy at times. The wrong cleanser and I’ve got blemishes for days.

They also included a little fall look book, which was a nice touch. It has fall fashion and tips for my absolute favorite season.

And! That’s not it. A coupon for Madewell. They did quite well with the extras this month, but I still had to say so long.

In it’s place I’ve decided to get a year subscription to Bust Magazine. I’ve always been a huge Bust fan, but I’m not one to go buy a magazine. This way, it’ll come right to my house! Yay!

Whats in my August birchbox

Oh August. This makes the 4th month since I signed up for Birchbox.  My favorite part about Birchbox would have to be getting beauty product samples, and well I just haven’t been getting as many as I’d like. I love getting things in the mail, so I of course want to keep getting prizes. I have so many perfume samples I could fill an entire bottle. It may smell terrible, but I could do it.

:: Schick Hydro Silk Razor
It’s a real shame I just bought a razor! I had been using the same razor for.. well… lets just say a real long time. Longer than any human should naturally use a razor for, that’s for sure. Kh got sick of seeing it in the shower and finally made me get a new one. I do love the fact this month they included a razor. They can be a little pricey at times, and it’s nice to be able to try out a new brand of razors without spending a fortune just to find you don’t like the brand.

:: per-fekt Beauty Last Perfection Gel
I haven’t tried this yet, but after this description -“This innovative lash enhancer may look like an ordinary mascara, but the similarities end there. The high-tech gel formula combines a flattering black pigment with a nourishing cocktail of ingredients to prime, condition, darken, and lengthen your lashes.” Sign me up! I’m only sad the bottle is a tiny sample size. I have a feeling I’m going to like this.

:: Caldrea Hand Soap
I got the lavender scented one. Ekk.. If there’s one scent that makes me cringe a little on the inside, it’s lavender. I’m coming off as super bratty in this run down of my goodies. I’m really not, I’m just a little picky when it comes to the products I put on my skin. But this soap is eco-friendly, comes in 6 scents, and it’s priced at $10.50. I’m liking the sounds of that.

:: Juicy Couture Viva la Juicy La Fleur
Hey, look it’s a perfume sample. This time it’s Juicy, so I’m a little ok with it. I still won’t wear it. I’ve got my au naturale fragrance that I stick to.

:: DDF Brightening Cleanser
What this is: A cocktail of potent active ingredients works to fade the look of brown spots, scars, and redness while also leaving skin fresh and smooth. I love it when product descriptions use the word “cocktail” to describe it’s ingredients. With most products it recommends extended use for best results, which always makes me hesitant. Extended use for me usually translates to skin irritation and breakouts. I have muy sensitive skin. But for $38, it’s a pretty reasonably priced cleanser.

What’s in my July Birchbox

July marks my third month of getting a Birchbox in the mail. Last month I got a few treasures that I’m still using, particularly the olive liquid eyeliner and the rose water spray. I’m still not completely convinced I’m going to keep my subscription, as I’m really more interested in the cosmetic/beauty product samples and there’s usually 1 or 2 in each box. But we’ll see.

This months Birchbox was brought to you by Glamour.

Onwards to this months goodies!

:: Oscar de la Renta live in love
Each Birchbox I get has a perfume sample in it, and well I’m never a big fan. Scents are to much for me and I prefer my perfume to come in the form of an essential oil. Different scents appeal to different individuals, so I can’t really speak for others on this one.

:: Larabar uber – roasted nut roll
From the moment I opened July’s Birchbox Kh has been wanting nothing more than to eat this tiny bar. I had to hide it from her until I finally photographed it. I don’t like things that are too nutty. I’m the type of gal that picks off peanuts from the top of her ice cream and avoids anything but peanut butter at all costs. So, I’ll have to update you later on how Kh likes the roasted nut roll.

:: Birchbox Exclusive Earbuds
I think it’s super cute they included earbuds in this months box. Especially since they’re hot pink and green.

:: Alterna Bamboo UV+ Color Protection Fade Proof Fluide
I like getting a chance to try out products before I sum them up in a post. This is one product I certainly did test out. It’s even more perfect since it’s been one hot Summer here in Massachusetts. Does the sun ever stop shining on my overly dyed hair? I think not, so I love using this when I know I’ll be out on particularly sunny days. The product smells nice and leaves my hair feeling silky.

:: stila It’s Go Time Lip Glaze
I have yet to try out this lip glaze. From the looks of it I’m not a large fan of the color, and I’m hesitant it’ll be too thick. I don’t want to come off as a 90’s teen wearing sparkly lipgloss, as tempting as that may be really.

:: Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint
They got the tint right when they sent me this sample. Thank goodness! I’m as white as can be (normally) and really liked how this matched my skin tone. I was a little disappointed in how little there was in the tube, just enough to maybe cover my face once. So I’m saving it for a special occasion.

So the tally? 2 out of 5. Am I slightly disappointed? Yes. I’m still waiting patiently to get another nail polish or even a new mascara to try out. I do like getting samples of products I’d never regularly buy in any other circumstance, especially hair products. But it gets to a point when a girl needs some products she’d actually use, you hear me?

Whats in my June birchbox

I had been seeing advertisements, and even other bloggers talking about this website called Birchbox. The gist of it goes like this – you subscribe (and may be put on a waitlist), fill out a questionnaire so they can assess what samples to send your way, pay $10 a month and you’ll receive hand-picked beauty products and lifestyle samples in a neatly packaged little box. I love getting things in the mail, and even more so I love getting new samples of products. After about 3 weeks of waiting, I got my email that it was my turn to finally sign up.

I took the plunge! My first box came in May. I was a little.. disheartened with it. My favorite item in the box was a sample of nail polish, disco nap was the color. Gold and glittery! Other samples included a headband, water fuse beauty balm, and beauty blender cleanser (which is used to clean off makeup brushes etc). All in all perhaps I just signed on at not such a good month? Well, I was hoping that was the case. At that point it seemed like I got a $10 nailpolish.

Now the month after May.. June! I was a bit hesitant to open the box, for fear I’d be disappointed again. I haven’t had enough time to actually try all of the products, but here’s what I got.

:: Cynthia Rowley Band-Aids
Designer Cynthia Rowley band-aid brand adhesive bandages, how cute right? Not your usual skin colored boring band-aid. I always liked band-aids with fun prints on them, I even have pac-man band-aids sitting in my bathroom at this very moment. I haven’t (thankfully!) gotten hurt recently requiring a band-aid, but the designs are super cute.

:: Melvita Floral Water
Now this I have tried. I’m a big (big) fan of any kind of hydrating mist/floral water. Especially this particular one. It’s described as being good for skin that has been exposed to sun, and helps to heal delicate skin. Well, delicate? Kind of. Sun exposed? Definitely. The scent I received (Rose) wasn’t that offending either. I can be real sensitive to smells at times, and I’m glad I didn’t get lavender. Headache central for this gal.

:: theBalm cosmetics Stainiac
Two-in-one lip and cheek stain you say? When I first saw the words “cheek stain” I was a little hesitant. But after watching the video tutorial they have on the site (linked above) I was sold. The stain is lightweight and doesn’t have a sticky consistency. I’ve used it on only my lips so far, and actually really loved it. Put a clear gloss over it for more of a shine and you’re good to go.

:: Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner
When it comes to my liquid eyeliner, I’m more than a little picky. I hate eyeliner that peels or flakes off after a couple of hours, needing constant reapplication. I tried this eyeliner for a photoshoot recently and was fairly happy with it. The color (I got olive, not my first choice but hey stepping outside my boundaries!) worked pretty well with my complexion and I never would have tried it otherwise. It had long lasting wear and the tip was easy to apply.

:: Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream
Ok so this one is still in the package, I have yet to touch it, BUT after reading the description I’m already sold on it. The formula is natural, no artificial dyes, fragrances or petroleum and Japanese mountain climbers use it when scaling Mount Everest. How cool is that? It’s ideal for dryness, flaky red skin, and even chapped lips. I’m only sad it’s just a small sample now.

:: John Varvatos Star USA cologne
I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ll say it again, I’m very sensitive to scents. The wrong smell can make me feel lightheaded and even nauseous, especially with prolonged exposure. I’m not a big fan of guy scents, and while I appreciate them trying to include different types of products in my birchbox.. I signed up for the woman’s birchbox. The scent itself is pretty sweet smelling and eh just not my cup of tea.

I’m going to be giving it one more month, and if I’m still not invested I may try a different sampling site. I’ve been introduced to Glambox, which I love the idea of only receiving cosmetic samples, or even Umba Box. Umba Box is a bit more expensive, but every month you get a box of all handmade items. Love that as much as I do?

Birchbox.. You have one more try to win over my heart. Don’t disappoint!

Product Review: Prive Detailing Pomade

Today I bring you a product review for Prive detailing pomade.By far one of my favorite styling products I’ve ever used. I’ve had short hair for more of my life than I have long, and I’ve used everything you can name on these locks. Styling mousse, hair gel, hair spray, texturizing clay, the works.

If you’re unfamiliar with Prive, here’s the goods:

  • Eco Friendly products
  • The creators also developed a can reuse program. Cans can be reused without contamination! Bring your empty can to the salon, salon sends it to Prive, Prive refills. Pure genius.
  • On top of this, their packaging material is all recyclable. Even down to the packing peanuts that taste like puffed rice cereal (not that I’ve tried it..)
  • They do not test on animals
  • The products smell good

That last one counts for a lot! I’m not a fan of products that leave behind a sterile/alcohol smell. I like my styled hair to smell fresh and clean. Even if it’s not always so.

Why I love it:

I have very unruly thick hair. Well, maybe unruly isn’t quite the term to use for it. But it certainly does have a mind of it’s own and I trust very few people to cut it. Since my hair is so thick, I find it very difficult to find a product that will last for more than a few hours in my hair. Normally my hair will just go flat, the weight of it winning over the hold factor of any product. Not with this! The hold is firm and lasting, yet it doesn’t weigh my hair down at all. The texture is thick and mildly sticky but easy to wash off, and that texture doesn’t translate once the product is in your hair. It makes holding pieces in one place much easy. Think those side swept bangs stay to the side all on their own?

How much is it? Usually around $25, at least thats what the website retails it for.

How do you use it? Work a small amount through wet or dry hair using fingertips. Separate and style as you like.

That’s an awfully small jar, how long does it last? I’ve had my little can for well over 6 months now. I use it in moderation and it really goes a long way.

Until next time folks!
